NEW!
Equality New Brunswick (ENB) is a taking a stand and bringing forth a legal challenge to the Human Rights and Charter Rights violations imposed on New Brunswick’s Trans and Non-Binary children. We are a non-profit organization composed of a group of concerned New Brunswick citizens dedicated to promoting equality and fairness for all citizens of New Brunswick. Equality New Brunswick (ENB) believes in the importance of building a community that is inclusive and respectful of all individuals, regardless of their background, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. Our work focuses on issues such as gender equality, 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, racial justice, and accessibility.
We need your help to raise legal funds to fight these Charter and Human Rights violations. We cannot go backwards! Trans rights are human rights. We need to stand up now to protect Trans and Non-Binary rights. We’ve enlisted Canada’s top legal expert on 2SLGBTQIA+ issues to fight this attack on Trans rights. The stakes are high for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This case will set a national precedent and support the efforts to push back against the trans discrimination occurring in other provinces and send a strong message that we must all stand up to protect our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Issue:
In May 2023, the New Brunswick Government announced a review of Policy 713 - an educational policy which sets the minimum standards to create safe learning environment for trans and non-binary students. The Government ignored all expert advice, including advice from the NB Child and Youth Advocate, medical doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, lawyers, school boards, teachers, indigenous leaders and others. The Government revised Policy 713 to eliminate the pre-existing right of trans and non-binary students to use their chosen names and preferred pronouns in schools, without being “outed” by teachers to their parents. Experts, including the NB Child and Youth advocate, have advised the New Brunswick Government that their revisions to Policy 713 are illegal. The government’s response has been “then take us to court.” So, that is our only option. Thank you for any donation you can make to help us with this challenge.
